In Białowieża you'll find the only preserved part of primeval forest that was once spread all over European lowlands. Here you can witness how Europe might have looked like centuries ago. The whole area is now on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Białowieski National Park's symbol is a wisent (European bison). It is here where the world's biggest population of wild wisents is located (the total population is about 3000 animals, whereof 450 live in Poland). People started to hunt down these mighty animals already in the 17th century and the last visent living in the wild was shot in 1919. After this almost total extinction it was of great importance to restitute these creatures into their natural habitat. As there were only 54 wisents that lived in various zoos, there wasn't much to choose from. Decision was made that 12 wisents shall breed further.

In case you want to bring some souvenirs that would remind you of your stay in Białowieża, choose Żubrówka - a Polish vodka distilled from rye. It's acquired a unique yellow colour as well as peculiar taste thanks to extract from holy grass. In every bottle there is a whole straw of that plant. The best way to serve Żubrówka is to mix it with apple juice. That drink is called... apple pie.

How do you get to the primeval forest of Białowieża? It's as easy as pie: take the plane to Warsaw or Olsztyn and rent a car at the airport. You can, of course, take your own car and travel with the ferry to the continent. Book accommodation directly in the primeval forest. Don't forget to take care of your travel insurance!
