The oldest nature reserve in the region (founded already 1938!) is a very popular place among the locals. Thanks to its beautiful hiking trails you can get really close the unique forms of nature: the park is one of the very few places in Poland where Swedish whitebeam grows wild! This tree happens to be a living proof of the Ice Age: the glacier transported whitebeam seeds and when the temperature increased and the ice melted down they could start growing in their new home.

The highlight (both metaphorically and literally) is a steeply leaning cliff which you should definitely see from the southern side (either from the southern district of Gdynia: Orłowo or from Sopot). The cliff is located close to the highest point of the area: 86 m above sea level. That’s how the cliff looks like from the wonderful pier in Orłowo:

The reserve is, of course, full of birds - a pair of binoculars or a camera will help you look for over 40 different bird species: tawny owl, eurasian wren, lesser whitethroat, goldcrest, European pied flycatcher, short-toed treecreeper...

Those of you who are interested in the military issues will also enjoy visiting this place: in the northern part of the reserve, quite close to the centre of Gdynia, you can find well-preserved cannons and artillery batteries from the cold war: that’s where a division of the coastal artillery defense was stationing in order to protect Poland against potential attacks of the hostile NATO-forces. The total weight of the artillery battery is 1466 tons and its walls are two meters thick. The gun comes from the Soviet Union (B-13, 130mm) and  it had a range of 25,5 km.

How do you get to the city of Gdynia? It's as easy as pie: take the plane to Gdańsk and rent a car at the airport. You can, of course, take your own car and travel with the ferry to the continent. Book accommodation directly in the heart of the city. Don't forget to take care of your travel insurance!
