Adventure castle in Gniew

In spite of being less known than big brother Malbork, the Gniew castle has numerous attractions in the medieval spirit – especially for groups. However, even if you’re travelling by yourself you’ll be enchanted by all the historical traces.

This immense fortress was built in the 11th and 12th century on the right sandbank of the Vistula river. In the beginning the castle was a property of the Teutonic Order. Afterwards it was used as the headquarters of polish governors, in the 19th century the castle was altered into… a granary and a prison. After a major fire in 1921, the fortress was almost completely destroyed. Luckily in the 1960s it was decided that the castle should be rebuilt.

There is one extremely important event in the history of the fortress: in 1626 two armies were standing against each other – both of them led by kings from the house of Vasa. The Swedish army was led by Gustav II Adolf Vasa, whereas the commander-in-chief of the Polish troops was Sigismund III Vasa. The battle remained unresolved – both parties had achieved their goals.

In order to commemorate the battle, it is reconstructed every year – the event is called Vivat Vasa!. Take a look at the film:

Nowadays the castle in Gniew is an obvious choice for all who want to organize a conference or a party in a unique manner. Dressed up hosts and guests, knight tournaments, an adventure track, shooting, medieval concerts, knight shows… All that will be combined with a festive dinner. You can choose a theme: a medieval banquet or a noble Polish dinner – it’s all up to you.

You’re also welcome if you just want to visit the fortress with your family or friends. The castle is open all year round (except for Mondays in the low season). You can go to the castle museum and the castle church. In the courtyard you can meet the mint master, knights, and – who knows – perhaps even a ghost?
